WHAT IS COACHING?

THERAPY

COACHING

"To believe in yourself and to follow your dreams, to have goals in life
and a drive to succeed, and to surround yourself with the things
and the people that make you happy--this is success!"

COACHING IS NOT...

Coaching is not counseling, psychotherapy, mentoring, consulting, or your best friend’s advice…

COACHING IS...
The most common question I get from people when I tell them I'm a Life Coach is: "Oh, is that like therapy?"

This question is one that excites me because the difference between the two is what actually made me decide to become a Life Coach!  When I was getting my Bachelor's degree in psychology, I began the process of applying to grad school for clinical psych.  Something held me back though, and I came to the realization that I just didn't want to spend the rest of my life analyzing and diagnosing other people.

Therapy is incredibly valuable, and many people out there need it.  And often, those in therapy work simultaneously with life coaches.  Psychotherapy and counseling focus on treating diagnosable mental illnesses, as well as identifying and healing traumas.  They are often driven by the medical model and third-party payment for services.  In this field, the focus is on analyzing what happened in the past to make you who you currently are.

Life coaching can also touch on things that happened in the past, but when this happens, the focus is on what you can learn from those past events.  In the simplest terms I can think of, therapy is about the "why" and coaching is about the "what."

Life coaches work with their clients to identify what they really want in life and how they can actually make their dreams a reality.  The process is solution-focused, and coaches help their clients set realistic, tangible goals.  We set action plans that move people forward into a life of balance, fulfillment, and meaningful purpose.

As a coach, my only agenda is helping you discover what you truly want--if your end goal changes (as it often does throughout the coaching process), I help you readjust your action plans to accommodate whatever your new vision may be.

WHY EVERYONE COULD USE A LIFE COACH

When we buy an expensive new toy—a new car, plasma TV, computer—it comes with a manual explaining how to use all the programs, how to treat it right, and how to get the most out of your investment.  Unfortunately, none of us were born with manuals on how to get the most out of our lives…and that often leaves us feeling overwhelmed, confused, or just going through the motions.  Life coaching is the best investment you can actually make for yourself—it’s an investment in you!

Life coaches are also similar to athletic coaches—they push you to achieve your very best, help you to see your strength even when you can’t see it, show you new techniques to improve your game, and celebrate your successes and wins along the way!

Q&A:

CAN YOU COACH ME EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIVE IN LA?
Of course!  Life coaching typically takes place over the phone, which allows us to work together no matter where in the world you might live!

This structure also enables you to be coached from the comfort of your own home, which reduces the hassle and stress of driving to yet another appointment.

Of course, if you DO live in the Los Angeles area, I am more than happy to meet with you in-person and we can decide which method will work best for you.

WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF LIFE COACHING BEFORE?
Life Coaching is a fairly new field in the last 30 years, but has quickly emerged as widely recognized profession.  Its roots are traced to three different disciplines:

  1. Positive, solution-focused psychology and career counseling
  2. Executive Coaching, which draws on the techniques used by management consulting, leadership training and organizational development
  3. Personal Development Training, such as EST, Lifespring, Landmark Forum, and Anthony Robbins

It’s no accident that the richest people in the world continue to use personal and professional coaches—and no, it’s not because only “they can afford it”.  What all the world’s most recognized leaders know is that they become even stronger and more successful with the help of an objective professional who:

  • gets to the core of your individual obstacles
  • helps you set tangible goals for the results you desire--goals that they will hold you accountable for
  • as necessary, provide you with insights and stragegies to achieve those results in the most effective and timely fashion possible
